MayWorks Marks 15th Anniversary in Winnipeg
Apr 30, 2009
To celebrate the 15th year of the Winnipeg MayWorks Festival and the 90th Anniversary of the 1919 General Strike, organizers have chosen a historic theme for this year’s festival, which opened this week and runs until May 30.
This year’s edition, Rise as One, recognizes working-class Winnipeggers, past and present.
MayWorks President Glenn Michalchuk says the historic General Strike is the inspiration for the festival, which celebrates "the art and culture that emerges from people’s struggles.”
Presentations will include Danny Schur’s dramatic recreation of Bloody Saturday on the very street that witnessed the Winnipeg General Strike’s most momentous events. There are also events that deal with today’s struggles such as GWG: Piece by Piece by Maria Dunn, which documents the lives of garment workers and Rise Up Singing featuring Anne Feeney and Joe Jenecks.

The Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union is one of the main organizations supporting the festival, which brings together artists who seek through their art to educate and organize around social, political and environmental issues.
It is one of several locally organized events that takes place in a number of Canadian cities each year.
