Migrant Farm Workers Win Right to Organize in Manitoba
Winnipeg (28 June 2007) - The Manitoba Labour Board has given migrant farm workers the right to unionize and bargain collectively, the first such decision since the Supreme Court of Canada's landmark ruling that collective bargaining is guaranteed by the 1982 Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Katz Commercializes Assiniboine Park
The City of Winnipeg recently decided to turn over control of Assiniboine Park and the Zoo to a non-profit corporation. After months of consideration, City Hall has finally decided to turn over control of a public entity to a private entity because Council has determined that this group would be more able to fulful the daily requirements of operating the Park and Zoo. This independent, non-profit agency will apparently include representatives from various community groups in addition to the City and Province. But handing over such valued public assets would set a dangerous precedent, and too many questions have yet to be answered.

National Aboriginal Day is June 21st. A day which the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs refers to as an opportunity for Aboriginal people to “express great pride for their rich diverse cultures with their families, neighbours, friends and visitors.”

Supreme Court Ruling Affirms Labour Rights Are Human Rights
Ottawa (8 June 2007) - The Supreme Court of Canada has declared for the first time that the collective bargaining rights of workers are protected by the 1982 Charter of Rights and Freedoms and are also a fundamental aspect of Canadian society predating the Charter.

TILMA a Bad Deal For Canada
In April 2006, the governments of British Columbia and Alberta signed a historic trade agreement that will have sweeping ramifications for citizens of both provinces, if not for those in the rest of the country. The Alberta-British Columbia Trade, Investment, and Labour Mobility Agreement (TILMA) will create an integrated economy for the two provinces by April 1, 2009.

A major American research organization has released a report that calls for the rebirth of unionization in the United States. In From Poverty to Prosperity: a National Strategy to Cut Poverty in Half, the Center for American Progress argues that the United States should set a national goal of cutting poverty in half over the next ten years, and proposes several steps to achieve this objective.

What About Privatization?
In an election campaign that so far has featured announcements at the rate of almost one per day from each party, there has been somewhat of an absence of a debate around privatization. Manitoba Hydro aside, we need to hear from each of the major parties about their priorities in terms of the public service and threats of contracting-out and other types of privatization.
