Happy Holidays from the MGEU!
Winter in Manitoba is a wonderful time to get together with family and friends and enjoy the spirit of the holiday season. At this time of year, we have a tremendous opportunity to appreciate Manitoba’s rich diversity. While we may celebrate the holiday season in different ways by recognizing different customs and traditions, Manitobans share a deeper foundation of peace and goodwill no matter where they’re from or what their religious or cultural backgrounds may be.

Is Mandatory Retirement Discrimination?
A former CTV employee who was forced to retire in September 2006 because he had turned 65 has resorted to arbitration in hopes of getting his old job back. He was told by his employer that he could not work past his 65th birthday because of company policy.

This date is observed by the international community every year to commemorate the day in 1948 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Declaration was one of the UN’s first major achievements, and remains a powerful instrument and symbol worldwide.

Canada's Tax System Inequitable
A new study by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) has demonstrated that the overall tax system in Canada no longer meets the test of fairness across income groups. Canada’s upper income earners are paying less of their fair share of taxes than they were some 15 years ago.

CAW Deal Sets Dangerous Precedent
A few weeks ago, Buzz Hargrove, President of the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW), proposed an agreement with Magna International that sacrificed some fundamental rights that organized labour has utilized for decades in bargaining collectively for better wages and working conditions. The agreement gives CAW the right to organize all Magna plants – a possible 18,000 employees in total.

Tax Cuts Are The Wrong Approach
On October 30, Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty tabled the government’s economic statement. It calls for $60 billion worth of tax cuts over the next five years, including a further one percent reduction of the GST to five percent. Personal income taxes will be retroactively cut to January 1, 2007, and the lowest marginal tax rate will decrease as well. The basic personal tax exemption (the amount Canadians can earn before paying tax) will also be raised by $700 to $9600.
