Correctional Officers and Youth Facility Workers Gather in Ottawa
Sep 27, 2012
Members from Components of the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) will be meeting in Ottawa on September 27 and 28 to discuss major issues affecting workers in correctional and youth facilities.
Members travel across the country to spend two days discussing such issues as overcrowding, inmate to staff ratios, inmate hospital escorts and the impact of federal legislation on provincial correction facilities and working conditions.
The meeting is timed every year to coincide with the Canadian Police And Peace Officer’s Memorial held on Parliament Hill.
In 1998, the federal government officially proclaimed the last Sunday of each September as Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial Day. On this day, members of the public are able to express their deep appreciation for the dedication and sacrifices made every day to keep our communities safe and honour those who have fallen on the job.
The National Memorial Day Service is organized by the Canadian Professional Police Association (CPPA), the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) and the Canadian Peace Officers’ Memorial Association (CPOMA).
