Convention FAQs
Listed below are some of the most frequently asked questions about Special Conventions. If you have any other question that isn’t answered here, please contact convention@mgeu.ca.
As a delegate, what should I expect at MGEU Special Convention 2023?
Special Convention 2023 is an online event and will be similar to the virtual Convention held in October 2021. It is a one-day event meant to debate and vote on proposed constitutional and policy changes that would strengthen MGEU's position at the bargaining table.
How do delegates receive their login/voting information for Special Convention?
All eligible delegates must complete an online registration form that will be sent in early January by email. At Special Convention 2023, delegates will be voting electronically using their own computer/device. Data On the Spot (DOTS) will email each delegate their voting credentials, which includes a link to the secure voting page as well as your unique Voter ID and Password needed to vote. Do not share this information with anyone else.
If delegates do not receive a message from DOTS within a few days of Special Convention , please review your junk/spam folder for an email from credentials@dataonthespot.com.
Once received, delegates should carefully read through the email and follow the instructions in preparation for Special Convention.
In addition to the voting link and credentials, online delegates will also receive a link to join the meeting on Zoom and will be using two different browser tabs (or if preferred, two different devices): one to watch/engage in discussion at Convention; and another to vote.
How do delegates access technical support, if needed?
If you are experiencing technical difficulties as a delegate logging-in before Special Convention, please email Data On the Spot (DOTS) at MGEUsupport@dataonthespot.com or call 1-833-368-7111. Online delegates can also contact DOTS during Special Convention for technical assistance.
Can non-delegates watch the Special Convention?
Yes. Special Convention Proceedings on February 24, 2023 will be live-streamed publicly on the Special Convention home page: www.mgeu.ca/convention
What do I do if I’m no longer able to attend as a delegate?
Please email convention@mgeu.ca as soon as possible to advise that you are unable to attend. If you fail to notify the MGEU of your absence, you may be responsible for covering some expenses, and your time-off request from work will not be honoured.
How do members become a Convention delegate?
Delegates attending the
MGEU's Special Convention 2023 on February 24, 2023 were elected in the spring of 2021 between
April and June. Should you wish to become a delegate for the next Convention,
you must be nominated by a fellow member at your Local meeting. These next set of Local
meetings will be held later in the spring of 2023. Local
Members present at the meeting vote to decide who is elected. The number of
delegates elected by your Local is determined by the Local’s size. For example,
a Local of 150 members or less is entitled to send one delegate to
Convention.
Does the MGEU cover my time away from work?
Yes, as long you complete the Delegate Registration Information being emailed to you in early January, indicating the dates and times you are scheduled to work. If so, a time off letter will be sent to you, which must be provided to your immediate supervisor.
Are child care costs covered by the Union?
As per MGEU policy, delegates can be reimbursed for child/elder care expenses while attending union-related business. Claimants are required to fill out and submit the Childcare/Eldercare Expense Form. Those who are able to find other means of care (i.e. family or friends) are encouraged to do so.
