It's Time to Move Forward on the Dauphin Jail
This summer I had the opportunity to visit a number of MGEU members’ workplaces as part of Public Services Week - one of those places was the Dauphin Correctional Centre. As officers took me around the facility it was more apparent than ever before that the needs of this jail have simply outgrown its space and there remain major safety concerns.

You’ll Notice Cuts to Public Services
When the Manitoba Government made a commitment during the recent election campaign that they would protect public services and the people who provide them, voters trusted that they would be true to their word and live up to that pledge.

Manitoba Falls Behind on Minimum Wage
In a recent open letter to the Manitoba Premier, Manitoba Federation of Labour (MFL) President, Kevin Rebeck along with 60 community, labour and non-profit organizations called on the premier to do the right thing and increase the minimum wage. The MGEU is a proud signatory to this letter, and I encourage all MGEU members to join the call for our Provincial Government to extend a hand to working families in our community.

This move was not undertaken on a whim: strike action is the last resort in any negotiation and is an indication of the level of frustration that these members have reached.

Manitoba must join with the rest of the country in expanding CPP
On Monday, June 20, 2016, Canada’s finance minister, Bill Morneau, and eight provincial ministers signed an agreement in principle to expand the Canada Pension Plan (CPP). This is a huge step forward to ensure retirement security for all Canadians. Yet, Manitoba remains one of only two provinces who chose not to sign the CPP agreement.

Self-Regulation, Community Paramedicine Discussed with Health Minister
I recently had the opportunity to meet with Minister of Health, Kelvin Goertzen to chat about a number of ongoing concerns that MGEU members have been consistently bringing forward relating to health care. The meeting is part of our ongoing commitment to ensure our members’ issues are getting in front of the new government and that positive changes are being implemented quickly.
