Boycotting National Public Service Week

In the midst of a budgetary debate over drastic cuts to the federal public service, the Harper government has had the audacity to declare June 10-16, 2012 as National Public Service Week.
Since its launch in 1992, National Public Service Week (NPSW) has celebrated the work and achievements of the Public Service of Canada.
Tony Clement, President of the Treasury Board, stated that the federal public service “delivers a wide range of programs and services to Canadians in very diverse work environments…each and every day, public servants rise to these challenges and help support Canadians’ quality of life. I would like to thank all public service employees for their hard work throughout the year."
Yet as he’s making these comments his government is laying-off thousands of members of Canada’s public service. The services these people provide should be celebrated by the federal government, not dismantled and weakened by unnecessary cuts.
In response to the hypocrisy of the government’s announcement, the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), which represents more than 170,000 public servants across the country, has decided to boycott National Public Service Week. They’ve chosen to show their employer that there is no celebration without the services and the people who provide them.
PSAC has decided that instead of participating in employer-sponsored events during the week, they’re going to organize their own.
