Our Cup Runneth Over
Nov 22, 2007
This Sunday, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers will make their first appearance in the Grey Cup since 2001. After a promising but uneven season, their impressive road victory over Toronto last weekend has put them in position to once again claim the Cup in this 95th anniversary of the league final.
It doesn’t matter how many times the home team makes it to the championship game – the excitement seems palpable everywhere you go. It’s all over television, people in the workplace talk about it, cars driving around the city have team flags flying from their windows. It’s one of the few truly galvanizing events that brings a city together like no other.
This year’s football championship has many interesting subplots as well. Winnipeg’s playing without their first-string quarterback and possible league MVP; it’s a battle of two prairie rivals who have never faced-off for the big prize before; and it’s more than likely Milt Stegall’s last chance to get that Grey Cup ring that he so richly deserves.
The Bombers have been in the news for other reasons this year as well. Most discussion has revolved around David Asper’s plans for a new stadium and ownership structure for the team. Whether any of this comes to fruition remains to be seen, but you can’t help but think that the attention now focused on the team and the enthusiasm surrounding the game would get many more locals thinking about the possibilities for a new and much needed facility.
And if all that isn’t good enough, we can’t forget that the Manitoba Bisons are in the Vanier Cup this Friday as well. What would be better than to have the two local teams leave Toronto as champions?
The Grey Cup is one of those truly quintessential events that has no equal. It’s not just a sporting event but a spectacle that unites Canadians from across the country, regardless of the teams that are lining up on the field. As a proud corporate sponsor of the Blue Bombers, the MGEU wishes the team much success this weekend and fully expects the Grey Cup to come back to Winnipeg, where it rightfully belongs. Go Blue!
