On Monday, November 21st, the Manitoba Government will lay out their blueprint for the province as the Lieutenant Governor reads the Speech from The Throne. The Throne Speech will outline what the government’s main priorities are for the upcoming legislative session.

Government Hires Firm with Privatization Track Record
Every chance they get, the provincial government reminds Manitobans how serious they are about balancing the budget. It was a huge pillar in their campaign and continues to be one of their most reiterated pledges. Recently, the government announced that KPMG LLP has been awarded a contract to look into how our tax dollars are being spent in the health care system.

MLL and MPI Safe from Privatization for Now
Last week I had an opportunity to sit down with Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister. As many MGEU members will know or will have seen in the media, I’d been trying to get the Premier to have a meeting since he was elected back in April.

Bill 7 is a Step Backwards for Working Manitobans
This week I spoke to a Legislative Committee about Bill 7, the Labour Relations Act, which will upset the current balance we enjoy in this province when workers wish to certify to join a union. It's Time to Move Forward on the Dauphin Jail
This summer I had the opportunity to visit a number of MGEU members’ workplaces as part of Public Services Week - one of those places was the Dauphin Correctional Centre. As officers took me around the facility it was more apparent than ever before that the needs of this jail have simply outgrown its space and there remain major safety concerns.

You’ll Notice Cuts to Public Services
When the Manitoba Government made a commitment during the recent election campaign that they would protect public services and the people who provide them, voters trusted that they would be true to their word and live up to that pledge.

Manitoba Falls Behind on Minimum Wage
In a recent open letter to the Manitoba Premier, Manitoba Federation of Labour (MFL) President, Kevin Rebeck along with 60 community, labour and non-profit organizations called on the premier to do the right thing and increase the minimum wage. The MGEU is a proud signatory to this letter, and I encourage all MGEU members to join the call for our Provincial Government to extend a hand to working families in our community.
